La Cabina (1971) free Download or Stream

Here's something a little special for you payphone enthusiasts this Christmas. A film much like Phone Booth puts the humble payphone as the emphasis of the film. I would be very interested to hear what your interpretation of the film was? Let us know in the comments field below. If you have already you can also see another film that was posted about here a short while ago called Phone Booth. Enjoy it and have a Merry Christmas.

La cabina ("The Telephone Box") is a 1972 television film directed by Spanish director Antonio Mercero, and written by him and José Luis Garci. The film starred José Luis López Vázquez. It first aired on 13 December 1972 on Televisión Española. The film won the 1973 International Emmy Award for Fiction.

In the 35-minute film, a man becomes trapped in a telephone booth, while passers-by seem unable to help him.

Please send in your payphone numbers and pictures. Visit this link for more info, it's easy.

It has just been announced (2008) that up to 90 TCB's in Ceredigion (amongst many more across the whole of Wales) are to be closed. 21 will be closed without consultation as they are within 400 metres of another box. More controversially the remainder are in rural areas, including the one shown here in Cwm Rheidol, and are to be closed "subject to consultation" (probably just a rubber stamp exercise). Ironically, many of the rural boxes are in areas where there is no mobile signal. BT claim that the cost of running each box is £1000 but as many of the rural ones do not accept cash, maintenance costs are minimal. They say that they have not specifically considered the issue of mobile blackspots but nevertheless are trying to balance their "social responsibility" with commercial demands.

2015 Update
The kiosk escaped closure and even has a cash box again.

A small series of payphones at the very busy Moorgate Underground Station. The first two here (+442073744897 and +442075882139) are at street level and have a decent ring to them both. There's two shops. One to the left (The Fresh Collection +442076284201) and another coffee shop opposite (Nero Express +442072566916) that has a bar at its window facing the payphones.

The other lone payphone (+442076061239) is situation underground by a newsagent (News Update +442072569056) and before the ticket gates. This one has a more shallow ring but as pictured you get some tourists looking at the information boards nearby.

A little interesting observation here is that all three area dial codes are different despite them being in the exact same postcode.

Great big thanks to Iain Macaulay for this very remote payphone contribution to the site here. It wins the most remote and far flung payphone listed here to date. Great to know it's exact location and it's listed telephone number too. Unfortunately the number is not connected or accepting incoming calls. Looking at these recent pictures and the StreetView image from way back in 2008, you get a surreal feel of how destitute this payphone is. I really wonder how often it gets used. If anyone passes this outpost ever please establish if the payphone is still there and what it's working state is. Thanks again Ian for this gem.

It's looking quite sad now and it's difficult to see the phone number. I thought you may be interested to know that It's former 'colleague' in TM1692 situated just across the road from Forncett St Peter church has fared much better having been recently converted into a defibrillator box by the parish council – a couple of photos attached. The more modern box located in Forncett End is also due to be converted into a defibrillator housing in the near future.

Many thanks to Phil Whiscombe for this contribution.

Great phone box that does get a good amount photographing by tourists in this very touristy area.

Although the payphone looks wonderful from the outside and adds very much to the area as well as the hotel (St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel London) which benefits from it behind, the payphone stinks inside from the usual urine. There's also a number of prostitution calling cards tacked up within the phone box.

The box does ring when called but due to the busy road it is hard to hear from outside. But you may catch a tourist opening the door.

Superb row of payphones in this very busy thoroughfare that is used continuously at all times. It's also one of the few banks that is still well used. Say two people in the space of a few minutes use these payphones. The numbers are listed here from payphones left to right. All payphones except for the first one ending 9015 ring loudly.

An great addition to the site here. This may well be the most photographed phone booth in the world. It stands in a perfect position for photographs with the Big Ben and Parliament Square behind it. There are a great series of old British phone boxes around this area. But this is easily the most popular with tourists. The other great thing about this booth is that it's dial-able and when called has a nice loud ring audible clearly from outside. Calling this repeatedly will get you an answer as there is always group of people lining up for their picture with this phone box.

Right up next to the famous London Eye. This place is normally buzzing with chords of tourists, particularly in Sommer months and school holidays. It has a decent ring to it too.

BBC Radio 4 - Don't Hang Up

Tuesday 25 December 2007 21:00
Alan Dein calls a public telephone anywhere in the world, hoping that someone will answer. Night Lines: Alan encounters the lonely, the lost, the brave and the strange.

Alan Dein (facebook / twitter) had actually called me also. I remember the call. However, at this time in my life I was very busy and really couldn't give the call the attention it deserved. I don't think it woould have made intriguing listening in any case. Alan Dein then went on to include a very cool interview with Mark Thomas the founder of another payphone website called the Payphone Project. The payphone I chose to take the interview call on was in Notting Hill's Portobello Market and is listed on the site here. The radio show itself in my view perfectly catches the feelings and the appeal on why I set up this site. Please let me know another thoughts you have on the show in the comment box below. It anyone has the recording for the other Don't Hang Up episode please get in contact with me please sfoswald+payphone@gmail.com.

Sir John Soane's family Red Telephone Box themed tomb in the Old St Pancras churchyard, London, United Kingdom.

Sir John Soane's family tomb in the Old St Pancras Churchyard (Since 1816). Design based on the Red Telephone boxes.

Soane's wife died on 22 November 1815, she had been suffering from ill health for some time. His wife's body was interred on 1 December in the #churchyard of St Pancras Old Church.

In 1816 Soane designed the tomb above the vault his wife was buried in it is built from Carrara Marble and Portland Stone. The tomb avoids any Christian symbolism (He was a #Deist), the roof has a pine cone finial the symbol in Ancient Egypt for regeneration, below which is carved a serpent swallowing its own tail, symbol of eternity, there are also carvings of boys holding extinguished torches symbols of death.

The inscription is:
Sacred To The Memory of Elizabeth, The Wife of John Soane, Architect She Died the 22nd November, 1815.
With Distinguished Talents She United an Amiable and Affectionate Heart.
Her Piety was Unaffected, Her Integrity Undeviating, Her Manners Displayed Alike Decision and Energy, Kindness and Suavity.
These, the Peculiar Characteristics of Her Mind, Remained Untainted by an Extensive Intercourse With The World.
The design of the #tomb was a direct influence on Giles Gilbert Scott's design for the Red Telephone Box.

Soane's elder son John died on 21 October #1823, and was also buried in the vault.

Soane died in 13 Lincoln's Inn Field at half past three on Friday, 20 January 1837. He was buried at this same #vault.
